US Lawmakers Renew Call to Designate Brotherhood as Terrorist Organization

A group of U.S. lawmakers reportedly sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson urging him to consider designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. The letter, signed by approximately 24 members of the House of Representatives, reportedly references the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act of 2017, which was introduced on January 9, 2017 and currently has 74 co-sponsors (all Republicans).

The letter states that Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE have all outlawed the group, and in doing so the United States can further isolate the group and restrict its operations. One anonymous analyst told Fox News, “There might be a debate over labeling the entire Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization, but there’s no debate about these three branches. Our Egyptian, Saudi, and UAE allies already did the legwork uncovering all the bad behavior, and they concluded these branches support terrorism, and they are looking to us for support.”

Any decision to designate the Brotherhood as a terrorist organization must be made by the Secretary of State. In June 2017, Tillerson said that designating the Brotherhood as a terrorist organization would complicate U.S. diplomatic efforts.
