TV Presenter Receives Five-Year Sentence for “Insulting Islam”

-

Beheiry is an Islamic researcher who sometimes took controversial stances as the host of his daily TV program on Islamic heritage, and he was often critical of conservative and Salafi teachings, including on issues such as punishment for apostasy and differing interpretations of the hadith—the sayings and teachings of the Prophet Mohammed.

A lawsuit was filed against Beheiry in April by al-Azhar for “broadcasting ideas which violate the foundations of Islam” and “deliberately aiming to make people question their beliefs.”

Egypt’s penal code stipulates that “insulting or undermining” an Abrahamic religion is punishable by up to five years in prison. In response to the decision, Beheiry said that he does not disrespect religion, and those who accuse him of such “have not seen my episodes.” He added, “Those who don’t like my style don’t watch the show.”

The channel that aired Beheiry’s show suspended it shortly after the al-Azhar suit. However, Beheiry stated that the show will resume, and he will not alter his style. Beheiry will appeal the verdict.
