All Egyptians deserve a government that protects and upholds their fundamental rights. The Egyptian people also deserve the support of the international community when those fundamental rights are violated.
The international community needs to take seriously the Morsi regime’s disregard for the fundamental rights of the people and the deteriorating environment for women, religious minorities, democracy activists, and moderate Muslims – all those who disagree with the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafists.
The recent attacks against the mourners at St. Mark’s Cathedral reflect the growing threat towards the ability of the Coptic community and others to live their lives and practice their faith in peace.
The international community must hold Morsi and his colleagues to account for what has happened under his reign. The Egyptian people deserve a government and a Constitution that protects and upholds their basic rights.
We ask that
- The US government strongly and publicly condemn attacks against women, religious minorities and others in Egypt.
- The US government condition any and all aid to Egypt on measurable steps in protecting and upholding the rights of all Egyptians.
- Members of Congress cosponsor and vote to pass H. R. 301 and Senators cosponsor and vote to pass S. 653 – these bills establish a Special Envoy to promote the religious freedom of minorities in the Middle East and Central Asia.
- The US and the international community press for transparent and honest investigations and justice for those who were killed and those whose rights are violated.
