In a letter to the heads of the US Senate and House of Representatives October 14, President Obama said an advance troop of about 90 arrived in Cameroon on October 12.
The team is expected to conduct airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations in the region ahead of the main mission.
The US leader said the troops are equipped with weapons for their own protection and security.
“They will remain in Cameroon until their support is no longer needed,” President Obama wrote.
Boko Haram's six-year insurgency in neighbouring Nigeria has lately spilled over into Cameroon and Chad, with repeated cross-border attacks and suicide bombings.
The extremist group has vowed to keep attacking Cameroon for supporting the Nigerian military in its battle to defeat it.
Earlier this week, two suspected Boko Haram female suicide bombers killed at least 11 people in the Cameroonian town of Mora, in the Far North region.
