The nun who was killed on Tuesday on the Cairo-Alexandria road was caught in the crossfire of a “revenge crime,” and was not a target of a sectarian attack, Egypt’s interior ministry said in a statement.
Unknown assailants were targeting a man and his son in a personal feud when the nun, Anastasia, was passing through the area in a car, and became caught up in the violence.

The man died and his son sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The son told the interior ministry that he and his father were targeted and named two people he claimed were behind the attack.

The interior ministry is currently searching for the assailants.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Mary Girgis Monastery said that nun Anastasia was travelling with several others in a car to the monastery when the shooting took place on the road, killing her instantly.

The four passengers accompanying the nun were also injured.

A prayer service was held for the victim in Cairo’s Mary Girgis Monastery early on Wednesday.

Anastasia, who was 54, became a nun in 1992.
