Several Cairo-based foreign diplomats and sources within the Brotherhood reportedly commented on the “influential” role that U.S. Ambassador Anne Patterson played in helping to establish and maintain a rapport between Washington and the Brotherhood. Political commentator Ashraf Swelam said Patterson “continues to view the Brotherhood as the only game in town, save for the military,” and another Western diplomat reportedly said that “for Patterson, the two most important telephone numbers are those of [Brotherhood leader] al-Shater and [Defense Minister] al-Sisi.”
