“Islamist Judges Issue Arbitrary Verdicts Against Copts,” Says Former Head of the State Council

-

Cllr. Gamal called on the Egyptian judiciary to rid itself of militant judges by filing complaints against them. Then, the judicial inspection will pension them off if they are proven to issue judgments involving ignorance, a lack of experience, errors or intolerance. Cllr. Gamal stressed that the presence of such judges spoils the judiciary .

On Monday, the North Cairo Criminal Court sentenced two Copts, Michael Adel Najuib and Michael Mossad Shaker, to three years in prison for stealing a machine gun from the army during the Maspero massacre of October 2011.

During the massacre, more than 24 Coptic demonstrators protesting in front of the state-owned radio and television building against the demolition of St. George’s Church in Marinab, Aswan (Upper Egypt)were shot and run over by armored vehicles

Cllr. Gamal pointed out that those in executive authority in Egypt prevent Copts from holding senior positions, whether administrative or political, for the same radical religious beliefs as when dealing with other issues concerning Copts.

Cllr. Gamal told MCN that judge’s verdicts should be based on impartiality, transparency and integrity.
