BBC reporter Andrew Hosken’s book “Empire of Fear: Inside the Islamic State” includes maps showing that, by 2020, ISIL envisions its caliphate stretching as far north as the Pyrenees and the Balkans and as far south as central Africa, and spans from the Western coast of Africa to the border of China.
“Once they have their caliphate, they plan to turn against the rest of the world,” Hosken said.
“They envisage the whole world being under their rule. They have 60 nations against them, including the United States and Russia, so one would think that is pretty unlikely. But one would have thought the first steps were unlikely as well.”
The book says ISIL, having already destabilized Iraq and Syria, is turning its attention increasingly to Saudi Arabia and Libya. Hoskens said the terror group has also come close to destroying Tunisia’s main industry – tourism.
“The worry is the longer they are there, the more likely it is they will develop biological or chemical weapons,’ Hoskens said. “If they had weapons of mass destruction, they would use them.”
