Armiya is Egypt’s most famous convert to Christianity, as he was the first Muslim to file a lawsuit in order to allow him to change his religion on his ID card.
Converting to a different religion in Egypt is only permissible under certain circumstances. Converting to Islam is considered normal, while converting to Christianity is considered an offense that can hold many risks, including death at the hands of extremists, as well as prosecution by security forces.
