“Customary reconciliation meetings sponsored by the police are imposed as an alternative for the implementation of the law, but they facilitate the impunity of the aggressors and do not legally redress the affected people. The state’s sponsorship of such customary reconciliation has lead to the recurrence of sectarian attacks,” Ibrahim added.
The EIPR called on the state to provide a legislative and political solution for the issue of building new churches, granting permits to already established ones, and to renovate and expand old buildings. An end has to be put to the objections by Muslims against citizens who simply want to exercise their constitutional right to worship.
The EIPR also called on the prosecutors not to legalize the customary reconciliation sessions and carry out the necessary investigations to identify the instigators and perpetrators and bring them to trial before a judge.
