Ten Members of Parliament are likely to be investigated for attending a recent conference hosted by the Geneva Center for Human Rights Advancement and Global Dialogue.

The MPs that attended the conference include Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee Mohamed Anwar al-Sadat and nine others. Deputy Speaker of Parliament Soliman Wahdan announced that several parliamentarians complained that the MPs violated parliament’s bylaws by attending the conference.

According to Wahdan, “If an MP receives an invitation that requires him or her to travel abroad to participate in an event, he or she should inform the bureau of this invitation in advance.”

Deputy Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee Atef Makhaleef railed against al-Sadat for attending the conference, accusing him of “treason.” He also accused al-Sadat of cooperating with the U.S. Embassy to support a “radical pro-U.S. agenda.” Al-Sadat argued he attended the conference to defend Egypt’s human rights record.
