Egyptian Interior Minister Promises to ‘Investigate Gabal al-Tair Incident’

-

Ramzi added that the minister promised to open an extensive investigation into the incident and requested a report on the losses so that the interior ministry could compensate the affected families.

On the other hand, the attendees put before the minister the issue of the kidnapping underage girls that has spread dramatically. They also spoke about the kidnapping of Copts in Upper Egypt, which has become a “big business.” Kidnappers target members of richer families and extort their families for ransoms. They blamed the security forces for failing to tackle this issue.

The crisis of Gabal al-Tir began on September 3rd., when a Christian mother of five named Eman Morcos Saroufim, disappeared. The woman’s husband, Sameh Erian, accused his former [Muslim] business partner of kidnapping her.

The husband filed a police report with Samalot police station. The next day the chief of the investigation department came and told the husband that his wife decided to leave the house willingly with his partner.

The people of the village of Gabal al-Tair rallied to put pressure on the security forces to bring back the woman. Dozens of young Copts protested in front of the village’s police station calling on security leaders to talk with them. Some leaders promised the protesters to examine the issue, but the security forces exercised acts of bullying against Christian citizens, including in their homes, and arrested some of them.

The meeting was also attended by Major General Sayed Shafiq, the Assistant Interior Minister for Public Security, and Major General Khaled Tharwat, the Deputy Interior Minister and head of the national security sector.

On the other hand, Al-Watan newspaper reported that the minister informed his visitors that the woman in question has “converted to Islam on Sept. 15.” Her husband and daughters deny even the possibility of such a conversion and demand that she comes out to explain her situation freely.

Noteworthy is that reverse eventuality, i.e. a Muslim disappearing then declaring a conversion to Christianity, would instantaneously lead to a major crisis, associated with mass attacks on innocent Copts and major police operations to arrest the convert.
