Egyptian Commission calls for dropping blasphemy charges against 4 Christian children

-

The Commission warned of the return of contempt of Islam cases against intellectuals and citizens of religious minorities. It added that during the last quarter of December 2015 and the first month of 2016, three judgments in contempt of Islam were issued against Egyptian citizens.

It pointed to Egypt’s constitutional and international obligations toward freedom of opinion, expression and belief according to Articles 64 and 65 of the Egyptian constitution and Articles 18 and 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It called on the Egyptian parliament to amend article No. 98 of Penal Code and revise all legal provisions that distort Egyptian legislation and represent a violation against constitutional and international obligations concerning freedom of expression and belief.

The four Coptic children were accused of contempt of Islam after recording a video in which they made fun of the Islamic State while saying Islamic slogans in a trip organized by an Evangelical church in Minya governorate, Upper Egypt. The Coptic teacher accompanied by the four students was sentenced to three years in prison last January.
