The Muslim Brotherhood, in cooperation with other Islamist parties, held demonstrations supporting the Egyptian president. The largest of these protests took place in Nasr city where Morsi’s supporters pledged to defend the president’s legitimacy and chanted slogans against the opposition. The numbers of participants in yesterday’s protests appear to exceed the numbers of protesters during the January 2011 Revolution that unseated Hosni Mubarak.
Sixteen demonstrators were killed yesterday during clashes at various locations throughout Egypt. Hundreds of opposition demonstrators gathered around the Muslim Brotherhood offices in Moqattam neighborhood of Cairo and attempted to storm the building. A number of Muslim Brotherhood members defended the building and in the ensuing clashes eight people were killed and scores injured. In Assuit, three more Egyptians were killed when unknown assailants opened fire on an anti-Morsi demonstration. The Interior Ministry also reported to having arrested several armed groups attempting to enter protest areas.
