Masked men reportedly stormed the office with guns, confiscated papers, arrested everyone in the office (including a food delivery man), and then searched the home of the organization’s head, Hisham Gaffar.
The Deputy Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Programme, Said Boumedouha, called the incident “a chilling and clear message that independent journalism and activities of civil society will not be tolerated in today’s Egypt,” and insisted that the government must give a reason for this armed raid and immediately release any person who was detained.
