Relations between Qatar and Egypt have been strained since the ouster of Mohamed Morsi. The Egyptian government accuses Qatar of harboring pro-Brotherhood biases, and has banned its al-Jazeera network.
Also on Sunday, eight alleged Brotherhood members were given preliminary death sentences for participating in “acts of violence” during 2013 riots in Minya that included storming a police station and killing a police sergeant. The verdicts have been referred to the Grand Mufti, who reviews all death penalty cases before a final decision is issued.
