Egypt’s Public Prosecutor Nabil Sadek referred 48 members with alleged connections to Islamic State (IS) to the military court, on Sunday, for suspected involvement in three deadly church bombings.
Thirty-one members of the suspects are in custody while others are still at large.
Sadek said that some of the suspects held leadership positions in ISIL and formed cells in Cairo and the southern province of Qena to carry out the church attacks, according to a statement.
Egypt’s Christian minority has come under attack in the past months.
On 9 April, a bomb detonated at St Geroge’s church in the governorate of Tanta, left 28 killed and more than 71 injured.
A second bomb detonated in front of the main gate of St Mark’s church in the governorate of Alexandria, killed 16 and injured many others.
The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the two bombings that took place in Egypt during the celebrations of Palm Sunday.
Palm Sunday’s bombings were not the first attacks against Egypt’s Copts.
In December, another attack took place at St Peter and St Paul church near to the main Cathedral, leaving 20 killed. IS claimed responsibility for this attack as well.
