According to a Ministry statement [Ar], Shoukry also emphasized that the UNHRC must respect cultural diversity in discussing human rights and cannot selectively target certain states by issuing politicized judgments.

Yet, Egypt’s rights record remains questionable, as the government continues to target NGOs, imprison journalists, and jail thousands of political prisoners.

Alongside the UNHRC, Shoukry also met [Ar] with Prince Zeid bin Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The two discussed technical cooperation between the Egyptian government and the high commissioner’s office and the state of human rights in the Middle East broadly. The High Commissioner reportedly thanked Minister Shoukry for the Egyptian government’s cooperation with UNHRC and encouraged further cooperation between the two entities. Shoukry emphasized the importance of dialogue, joint action, and capacity building as opposed to politicization and polarization.
