Egypt Churches and Government to Study Draft Law on Church Building

-

Henaidi – in remarks to parliamentary reporters – said "The Ministry is taking special steps to help create an atmosphere of stability in the country after two revolutions, and one of the most important things required is to identify the demands of groups that had suffered in the past from neglect or marginalization."

Henaidi added that "The ministry has asked all Christian denominations to get consensus among themselves on their demands in a draft law on the building of churches, and that they spent three months to incorporate their ideas and demands. On this occasion Bishop Paula came to the ministry as a representative of the Churches to make these demands."

He added that the ministry will form a committee of representatives of the Churches and parties of the government, such as Interior and Justice ministries and other concerned departments, to review these demands and agree on a formula satisfactory to all.

Henaidi pointed out that the bill would be presented to the Committee on legislative Reform, if it was completed before the formation of the new parliament, stressing that in all cases, the bill will be presented to the next parliament.

He said that the Coptic demands included the need for clear definition of what a church is, and how to identify places where the necessary conditions to build a church are met, in terms of proximity to city centers, the concentration of Copts and their accessibility.

Henaidi stressed that the church building bill takes precedence over the personal status law for non-Muslims.
