Different Cases, Different Judgments

According to Ramzy, the Maspero massacre has not seen a similar ruling because the defendants are leaders of the army. “Justice is undoubtedly absent in the issue of Maspero,” he said.

The solution to move past the current impasse is either for the Muslim Brotherhood to call for early presidential elections, or for President Mohamed Morsi to form a government of technocrats consisting of all national forces.

The Port Said Criminal Court sentenced 21 people to death yesterday in the case of the Port Said massacre. The decision was referred to Egypt’s Mufti for approval. The Mufti must approve any death sentence in Egypt.

A session was scheduled for March 9 to issue a verdict against the rest of the defendants.

The Port Said massacre saw 74 football fans killed during a match between Port Said’s al-Masry and Cairo’s al-Ahly teams in February 2012.

Not even formal charges have been made so far in the case of the Two Saints Church massacre in Alexandria, which took place on New Year’s Eve 2010/2011 and claimed the lives of 21 Coptic Christians and injured hundreds.
