Coptic Teacher Detained on Accusation of ‘Insulting Islam’

Ebeid denied the accusations during her questioning, and called for the testimonies of other teachers, students and their parents to prove her innocence.

Secretary of the Human Rights Committee of the local Bar Association, Rafla Zekry, told MCN, “Three children testified against the teacher, but their testimonies were contradicted. Ten students completely denied the incident.”

He added that he would submit an appeal against the decision of her detention, adding that the public prosecution would have released her, but the Public Attorney ordered otherwise .

Director of South Luxor Educational Department received a memorandum from the chairperson of the school’s Fathers Council accusing Ebei, a social studies teacher, of insulting Islam and proselytizing amongst the students.

One of the student’s fathers submitted a complaint signed by a number of teachers and parents against the teacher, stressing the need for conducting an investigation into the incident. They warned of a potential sectarian sedition in the area if the authorities did not take the necessary legal measures.

Governor Ezzat Saad ordered to have the incident referred to the prosecution that ordered Ebeid’s imprisonment.
