In his letter to Secretary Kerry, the congressman said, “The United States has an obligation to stop this persecution and ensure the protection of all minorities and foreign nationals in Libya.”
Representative Wolf called upon Amb. Patterson to raise “their cases with the highest level of Egyptian officials,” noting it would “signal that the U.S. is concerned and watching.”
“Please raise this with Egyptian government officials until their freedom is secured.”
Speaking in an interview with MCN’s Editor-In-Chief, he said, “The Egyptian government must act on behalf of its citizens and intervene with Libyan authorities to secure their release and provide them with legal protection.”
“The failure to investigate officials regarding the Maspero massacre, which claimed the lives of about 20 Copts, after more than two years is very bad,” Rep. Wolf said when asked about the judicial stagnancy over the incident.
Congressman Wolf had recently toured the Middle East, during which time he visit Egypt and met with Prime Minister Hisham Qandil.
When he met with Qandil, and a number of Egyptian dignitaries, he discussed with them minority rights and the current situation in Egypt with regards to human rights, particularly freedom of belief and expression.
Congressman Wolf is well known as a staunch defender of religious freedom in the MENA region and has intervened several times with Egyptian authorities regarding such issues.
