Attack Against Copts in Wasta Feared on Fate of Muslim Girl

-

The extremists accuse the church of converting Rana to Christianity and hiding her.

Rana Hatem sent two letters to her family to inform them that she traveled abroad with her Muslim husband. Rana said that she fled after her uncle sexually harassed her.

Her father claims she escaped with a Copt to Turkey. The Public Prosecutor ordered to imprison the “accused” person’s father, mother, and cousin for two weeks, pending investigation on charges of “hiding information’. He also issued an international arrest warrant, via Interpol, against the Coptic man and Rana.

The Maspero union added on its Facebook page that the city has witnessed clashes and the extremists have renewed their threats, demanding Copts to close their shops.

They threatened Copts with dire consequences if the Muslim girl did not return to her family. The union stressed that the current situation could lead to a new disaster by killing Copts and burning their shops, houses and churches.

The Maspero Youth Union called on the Egyptian government and the Interior Ministry to intervene and contain the situation. They stressed the need for protecting Copts and arresting the preachers of incitement.

The union highlighted the failure of the Egyptian authorities to prevent the aggressions that targeted Copts in Khosos and St. Mark’s Cathedral.
